I don’t know about you, but being I’m a broke college student. Decorations are the last thing I want to spend my money on because honestly, anything over $8 is way too expensive.
DIY (Do-It-Yourself) projects are perfect for when you’re broke! This one is my personal favorite craft project to do. I’ve made dozens of signs with random wood, tools and paint I’ve found around the house.
My neighbor was rebuilding their fence, so they let me take all of their old fence posts for free! I had all of the tools laying around the house (my family loves to build crafts). And for the paint, I went to Home Depot. If you go to the paint section, ask for they’re “Oops Paint.” When they mix the paint colors, sometimes they mess up and the color isn’t perfect for the customer, so they will sell it for extremely cheap. I think I bought 4 cans for about $8.
· Scrap wood
· Sand paper
What you’re going to do is take all of your wood and line it up so it is even. Then you’ll want to take a pen and mark exactly where you want to make cuts. I kept my designs simple and made large square signs. But, it’s your choice! I’ve seen people get very creative and even cut their wood so it makes shapes like the state of Oklahoma!
Next you will want to saw. I chose to use an electric saw (mostly because I’m to impatient to be old fashioned). If you feel uncomfortable, then see if you know someone else who would feel safer using the saw. And be sure to protect your eyes! I wore my swimming goggles which looked goofy but it’s better than getting wood in your eyes!
After you’ve cut the wood how you would like, you need to sand it down. If you do not sand it, you’re most likely going to get a splinter. It also makes it harder to paint if the wood isn’t even. It will also make your sign look more professional – no one will ever know it was made from almost trash!
Now comes the hard part. You need to make sure all of your wood is lined up perfectly before you start drilling. Be sure you are extra careful when handling old wood, because if you drill too deep, the wood will crack and you’ll have to start all over. You can of course use a hammer and nails if you would like as well. I did for my first few signs, but realized a drill was easier. However, it is up to you! Either one will work just fine.
And here comes the fun part! PAINTING! You can paint anything that comes to your perfect little mind. I went a little crazy and made about a dozen signs. On some I put quotes, some I drew pictures, and some I just painted a solid color. It doesn’t matter what you do at all! However you want to express yourself is going to be beautiful.
Let your artwork dry and ta-da! You are done and now have a room full of original artwork that you saved a lot of money on.
And hey, if you’re really good you can even sell them and use the money to buy more decorations! Or spend your money on potato chips, either one is a good idea.
